Response to: 5 Elements of Composition in Photography by Darren Rowse
There was a lot of helpful information provided in this article. It gave explanation for the most important 5 parts of photography. Those 5 main elements of photography being:
-1: Pattern can be seen all around us at all times. Highlighting those patterns can lead to a striking shot.
-2: Symmetry is something that can go work well in a photo or ruin it. A shot that is symmetrical with strong composition and a good point of interest can create a striking image. Without a strong point of interest. Its best to work with it to understand how it works best.
-3: Texture is created by having any form of three dimensional object in the shot to make it seem more alive.
-4: Depth of field comes in two forms. There is shallow depth of field and good depth of field. The form of depth of field use heavily affects the composition of an image. It can be used to isolate an object or it can be used to get a bigger frame.
-5: Lines can be a powerful element of a photo. It helps guide the view of the viewer to the key vocal point of the photo. The direction of lines in photos changes the photo in many different ways.
Response to: Photographing the 10 Elements of Composition
From this video I got a few good helpful tips such as:
-Point draw the attention of the eye and guide it.
-Texture in a photo can help convey an emotion. Different amounts of texture and their harshness can really change how a photo can be seen. When editing your photos that have a certain texture try to improve that emotion it gives by enhancing other aspects of the photo.
-Line is used to draw the viewers eye from the foreground of a photo to the background of the photo. Line helps the photos have a sense of internal structure and unity that it may be lacking.
-Shapes can either be used as an object in a photo or they can be used for structural purposes. They can be used as elements of compositions or the overall composition.
-Space can either be negative or positive. Positive space attracts the eye and negative space fades into the background.
-Colors have different affects on photos. Warm colors attract the eye of the viewer while cool colors don't as much. When warm and cool colors are combined, it gives a nice contrast of color spectrum.
-Balance is when two objects of a photo have similarly attract the viewers eye due to having the same amount of visual weight.
-Tone is important because the brightness of subject helps convey a strong emotion and helps a photo stand out more to the viewer.
-Distance overall changes the structure of a photo and is important when it comes to making sure that a photo overcrowded.
Top 5 Picks
Critique:
1. What camera metering mode did I use and why? Due to being home, I have no access to an actual camera so I used my phone to take photos
2. Do I have a strong composition? I feel that with this given assignment, my composition is a bit all over the place. Due to trying to fit so many elements into one photo, it becomes overcrowded almost.
3. How well did I edit my photographs? I think the editing is probably the best part of the photo considering that filtering and changing of exposure and other aspects of the photo really help the original photo.
4. What would I do differently if I shot this assignment again? If I was doing this assignment again in the future, I would probably want to focus on getting less elements of composition so I can focus on them and make them clean and nicely executed.
5. Do you think your photographs belong on the blog home page and should be considered one of the best from all the photo classes? I think with the given assignment, it doesn't fit my photograph style and would not do a good job at representing what I usually do. Plus I believe others probably had done a better job at executing this assignment compare to how I did it. I wasn't as inspired with the photo prompt as I though I was going to be.
